IMA & FOMA DEMANDING RIGHT TO PRESCRIBE MEDICINE WITH DOCTORS ONLY AGAINST MCI GENERIC MEDICINE ORDER

In refrence to MCI Ethics Regulations Clause No. 1.5 states " All physicians SHOULD prescribe medicines with generic names, legibly and preferably in capital letters and he or she SHALL ensure rational prescription and use of drugs",recently a meeting of IMA ( Indian Medical Association ) & FOMA (Federation of Medical Associations of India) held and resoluted that they will soon meet Hon'ble President,Priminister and Health minister of India and will raise following demands.
1. The judgement to choose a rational drug and its format vests only with the Registered Medical Practitioners. This right of the medical profession is sacrosanct.
2. IMA - FOMA also wants the Government to strengthen Quality control mechanisms to ensure adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for patient safety.
3. For a rational prescription, doctors should choose drugs generic-generic or generic - brand based on quality, efficacy and economy and write legibly and preferably in capital letters.
4. IMA-FOMA recommends that Government should ban differential pricing of a drug under different brand names (generic-generic, generic- trade or generic- brand) by one company. (one chemical drug, one company, one prise) as most medicines or chemical name are marketed in market by same company as one called Branded medicine or name ,same is marketed as generic but with no chemical name but new brand name ,so called Generic medicine and rarely company sell medicine in market as purely generic name or chemical name.Until a Company is asked to sell medicine with one name or generic branded medicine with difference in wholesale and retail price is from 100 to 500% exist such practice will be continued and if Doctors use to write generic name as suggested by MCI which should be chemical name as no medicine in market with a chemical name or generic name as sugested byMCI is present all generic medicines bear alsoa brand name and if doctor prescribe medicine by chemical name then Chemist will give that brand which is more cheap and profitable but may lack in efficiency .If patient does not get relief,responsibility will be of Doctor.secondly in India so many medicines are sold unethically and so many brands are manufactured without license so in a market of fake medicines such writing as suggested by MCI officials sitting in AC chambers of fie star hotels bears no ground reality.
5. IMA FOMA will be meeting the President of MCI, Union Health Minister and Prime Minister of India about the views of the medical fraternity on this issue. All the constituent members of IMA-FOMA shall communicate these IMA-FOMA Delhi Resolutions to its members.
