Five doctors, including the dean of the Government Medical College (GMC) Surat, were booked in Khatodara police station on Wednesday for allegedly abetting suicide of a 24-year-old resident doctor. The victim had ended life on Tuesday by jumping from an under-construction hospital building on New Civil Hospital (NCH) campus. The accused were also booked under Prevention of Atrocities Act following allegations levelled by father of the deceased.
The complaint was lodged by Dinesh Parmar, 56, deputy engineer in Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited office at Bharuch. Police booked Dr Milan, Dr Naresh Makwana, both senior resident doctors in surgery department, Dr Nimesh Verma, head of surgery, Dr Jayesh Brahmbhatt, dean of GMC, and Dr Ganesh Govekar, head of department of forensic. The accused were booked for abetment of suicide and Prevention of Atrocities Act. Dhaval, 24, son of Parmar, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by jumping from ninth floor of the under-construction multispecialty hospital on NCH campus.
In his complaint, Parmar alleged that Dhaval had come to study at GMC Surat one and half month ago in masters of surgery. His senior doctors Milan and Naresh were harassing him mentally and physically, Parmar alleged. He also alleged that knowing all details head of department of Surgery was also accussing thids Doctor repeatedly. They also made caste specific slur for Dhaval and due to their harassment the deceased being a member of Schedule community ended life, the father claimed in his complaint.Dean of the Hospital was booked he didi not take any action timely otherwise life of young Doctor could be saved.Forensic expert for not doing justice and proper care while completing medico legal formalities to save senior colleagues and doctors.
Resident doctors need special attention throughout India,as due to pressure of wrking round the clock 24x7 with almost no leave on saturday and sunday or any holiday with very imited leaves which are often rejected by unit head and head of department as actually in most hospitals departments run on their shulder and ground work, most senior doctors come in morning hrs and leave hospital by noon ,even at hospital beside doing special tp level work all ground level work and morning evening round, attending patients in emergency ,icu, wards are seen by them.As they are either doing PG or DNB so under presuure that if they donot work properly or raise voice against so much pressure or any unjustice ,unit head, senior doctors and HOD does not allow their thesis to be completed which is prerequisite for passing PG examination and gives them work to learn,So ,practically they are like subordinates wh can be accused or misbehaved to any extent.
Government also pay them meagrly ,in most hospitals there is no hostels for them ,many gets married as most of acquired age of more than 26 to 30 yrs,and there may be problem in family economically but with such less payment they cant survive themselves what to talk of supporting family or spouse. Many private Hospitals has taken DNB courses at their hospitals only as they get such hard working doctors with a monthly payment of Rs,30000/- pm where hospital doesnot provide them residence, food or any free treatment and even cut their TDS showing them as salaried persons on contractual bond while DNB board says it is stipend  whereas they pay a simple MBBS resident in their icu or emergency more than Rs 60000.- or more per month and Hospital earn in crores by their service but while paying them is very much miser,a well evident exploitation but if candidate raise voice then Hospital and department will ruin his/her life or he/she will be forced to do suicide as done above.
. Silence adopted by DNB Board on this issue indicate for a hidden corruption at Government level othewise how a board run by Doctors who experienced all these things is deaf and dumb fr problem of these residents.
This is not only death, many death happened in premier institute like AIIMS and almost in many hospitals and medical colleges throughout India,so a grievance cell for listening to residents must be constituted and every effort is made by colleges ,MCI,DNB Board,Ministry of central and state Ministry and association like IMA that these young budding doctors need not to die like this as they are hackled ,amnhandled and beaten most by roudy patients attendents in opd, ipd, icu, lab or in ct scan, usg or treadmill ,echo room for not getting service or if any complication happens to patients or he/she expires although fr their no fault.
