Most women are infected with HIV through vaginal intercourse, and without effective vaccines or microbicides, women who cannot negotiate condom use by their partners remain vulnerable.Young women of reproductive-age are among those at greatest risk of acquiring HIV, and several studies have suggested that during pregnancy women are even more susceptible to infection.Researchers from the U.S. and abroad used bacteria inherent to the human vaginal tract to develop a live, topical microbicide that may induce production of HIV-1 protein inhibitors and prevent HIV INFECTION IF THIS GEL IS USED DURING ITERCOURSE or a condom is used,they not only PREVENT HIV but OTHER STDs too.
Most studies of HIV transmission after vaginal exposure to date have been done in rhesus macaques and focused on the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that meets the vagina. Some portions of the female reproductive tract are more likely to be infected by HIV, particularly the ectocervix compared to the endometrium, researchers have discovered.
This variance is likely due to the increased presence of a specific type of lymphocyte, named CD4+ Th17 cells, which we found were irregularly distributed in FRT tissues and more likely to be infected by HIV compared to other CD4+ T cells," explained Rodriguez-Garcia. "We also found that the FRT from postmenopausal women contains more of these very susceptible cells compared to premenopausal women, suggesting postmenopausal women could be at higher risk to acquire HIV."
