Making a passionate plea to eliminate viral hepatitis from WHO South-East Asia Region, Mr Amitabh Bachchan, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Hepatitis in the Region, stressed increasing awareness about the preventable disease and ending discrimination against the affected. He being the Milennium super mega  star and most popular celebrity first declared openly that he is only surviving on 25% of Liver as rest damaged by Hepatitis B acquired due to contaminated blood transfusing while filming "coolie" picture. This is a great gesture and his open confession end stigma and hate in society regarding the disease.
“If this ailment is detected in time and care can be taken, there are medications that can halt this virus as in his case, we can conquer over hepatitis.Such declaration by a Star  boost all patients and motivate them to first test and then start treatment whenever either they tested positive or come in contact with this disease by anonymous sex or blood transfusion or by infected needles or mother to child in Hepatitis B and c and Food and water in Hepatits A and E . A very high burden of hepatitis exists in the South-East Asia Region. Whatever work we can do to eliminate hepatitis – to detect and cure it – we must do,he appealed in 70th regional Meet of WHO South East Asia.
The Goodwill Ambassador said, “This is a moral and social issue. Discrimination against people with Hepatitis continues to happen socially in our midst. There are women who are refused marriage, women who are refused the ability to bear children because they have hepatitis B and there are countries who deny visa to people with hepatitis. Discrimination needs to stop. People must know that there is a cure for hepatitis by good medicines .we can prevent it by universal immunisation of hepatitis B and A and can protect us by safe blood transfusion, providing safe drinking water and food and sex with condom.testing and early diagnosis must be be done in all suspects.
“Each year viral hepatitis infects millions of people across the world and of these 1/3rd in this Region of total affecting approximately 500 millions of people, killing 410 000 people – more than HIV and malaria combined. It is also a major cause of liver cancer and cirrhosis, contributing to premature morbidity and mortality, and undermining economic growth and the push to achieve health and wellbeing for all,” Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director South-East Asia, said, stressing on the need for countries to prioritize action to reverse this trend, which all most all countries agreed to finish it by 2030..
