Post Mortem examination is a very important examination in medico legal cases ,on the basis of this examination report the cause ,nature of a death is determined and for any unnatural death the court rely on this report mostly to fix the crimanlity behind it or just reject it beside even natural death definite cause of death is confirmed by this report.Post mortem examination and conducting medical examination in all medico legal cases is mandatory for doctors since inception of our republic. But now there are more number of such examinations due to rising trend of crimes and terrorist actvities and in vibrant media and universal accessibility of expertise and more developed innovations to detect and confirm crime is demanding that an Expert Medical graduate can perform it better needing change in curriculam of MBBS course during reading Forensic medicine and in internship one month practical training for the same But MCI still not agredd for this.
After joining any Government service in our country every MBBS graudate is bound to do a post mortem examination and every doctor whether in private or government do medico-legal examination in assault cases, recording of dying declaration, sexual violence exam, injury report preparation, age estimation, alcoholic and weapon exams, burn and dowry cases including postmortem exam etc. Inspite of poor practical training in both cases. A quality medico-legal work cannot be expected from such pseudo-experts. That’s why at present quality of medico-legal work in the country is very poor and abysmal which helps in acquittal of accused in majority of cases and also leads to miscarriage of justice, the court mostly criticise and pass stricture like this as judgement is affected.
The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court has directed the Medical Council of India (MCI) to review the curriculum of forensic medicine in the MBBS course and find out if any revision of the curriculum is needed in year 2014 ,peeved by the “inadequate and irrational” curriculum of forensic medicine in the MBBS course, a Sevagram-based doctor Indrajit Khandekar had approached the judiciary seeking its immediate revamp.BUT the recent RTI  posted by professor further reveals that the apex education regulator has never given a directive to universities to impart medical education to MBBS students by taking a practical assessment/ examination of the student in this regard and still consider that MBBS graduates are competent to conduct post mortem examinations without any assessment in practical examinations since 1997.
Dr Khandekar stated that “Post mortem examination and its report play a very important role in crime investigations. In India, more than 80% post mortems are conducted by MBBS graduates.post mortem reports that provide incomplete information were unreliable and often led to miscarriage of justice.Though judiciary blamed doctors for such reports, sole responsibility lies with MCI and its faulty curriculum,MCI is misleading the nation and criminal investigation system by producing incompetent doctors, as far as post mortem exam is concerned.
He further suggested compulsory internship in CFMU(clinical forensic medicine units) and autopsy units for a period of one month; optimum teacher student ratio for bedside practical teaching; provision for court visits for MBBS students in batches; and teaching of the student how to conduct different medicolegal examinations should be taken up in the later part of the clinical years as it is necessary for court judgement and its necessity is very much needed now a days.
