In a meeting by UNAIDS and hosted by the city of Melbourne, Australia, global leaders agreed that cities and local leaders are the key to ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. In a press release to announce the meeting Michel SidibĂ©, UNAIDS Executive Director said, “We will not end the AIDS epidemic without harnessing the power of cities.”Cities where mazimum key populations reside fro econmy and live hood are main breeding place for hiv/aids,so more concentrations of all ngo's should be focused there particularly in ghetos of commercial sex workers, migratory people redidential areas, druj injectors, and peddlars, flying sex workers, msm trannsgenders, living relations people and high up gatehreting where sex and drug offered in exxchange of money and power.

The inaugural Cities for Social Transformation meeting took place on the sidelines of the 20th International AIDS Conference held in July. Mayors and representatives from 18 cities attended the event. The leaders committed to a rapid scale-up of prevention, treatment, care and support programs, as well as addressing the needs of people at higher risk of HIV infection.

Scott Berry, Regional Advisor of The HIV Foundation Thailand was the principal author of the UNAIDS Cities Concept Note that led up to the Melbourne meeting. He explained that, “for UNAIDS the goal is to ensure that no one is left behind in the response to HIV across Asia.”

SidibĂ© explained, “It’s time to focus on local epidemics and city governments will be the driving force for change. They are the catalyst for forging new partnerships between communities, civil society and governments.”

Berry explained that Asia has the largest number of megacities in the world. Megacities are cities with more than 20 million residents. Berry said that Asia would soon be the only region in the world to have ‘hyper’ cities of more than 40 million residents. But to date, international attention has been focused on national governments. “There needs to be more much attention on partnership between city governments and their national counterparts as well as local city partners,” he said.
